Ζάκυνθος
The island that Greece put on every postcard
Home to the most photographed beach in Greece, a sea turtle nesting paradise, and glowing blue caves — Zakynthos blends raw natural drama with Ionian warmth and Venetian heritage.
Zakynthos has a split personality, and learning to navigate both sides is the key to loving this island. The eastern coast is resort Greece at its most developed — Laganas, Tsilivi, and Alykes serve up package holidays and nightlife. But turn west, and Zakynthos transforms: white limestone cliffs plunging into impossibly blue water, sea caves that glow turquoise from within, and one beach so iconic it has become the symbol of Greece itself. Navagio — Shipwreck Beach — needs no introduction. The rusted hull of the MV Panagiotis sits on brilliant white sand at the base of 200-meter vertical cliffs. The only way in is by boat. But Zakynthos has so much more. The Blue Caves near the northern tip create a kaleidoscope of blue light inside sea-carved arches. Laganas Bay is the most important nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean — the entire bay is a National Marine Park. The island's interior is mountainous, green, and threaded with olive groves. Bochali offers a Venetian fortress and panoramic views. Keri serves up the best sunset. The local food leans Ionian: pastitsada, stifado, mandolato, and ladotyri. Zakynthos is also the birthplace of Dionysios Solomos, who wrote the Greek national anthem.

June and September are the sweet spot — warm air (27-30°C), water 23-25°C, manageable crowds. For sea turtle nesting, the season runs May-October with hatchlings mainly August-September. Visit Navagio viewpoint in morning before haze.
Zakynthos Airport (ZTH) has year-round Athens flights (~1 hour) and seasonal European charters. Ferries from Killini on the Peloponnese to Zakynthos Town (1 hour 15 min, up to 7 daily in peak). Killini is ~300 km from Athens (3.5-4 hours). Seasonal ferry from Kefalonia enables inter-island hopping.
Visit Navagio Beach on the first boat from Porto Vromi (~9am) or after 3pm to avoid midday crush. The clifftop viewpoint above Navagio is free and open 24 hours — go at sunset for different but equally stunning photos. Respect turtle nesting areas at Laganas Bay — no beach use after dark, choose eco-certified boat operators. The western and northern coast is where Zakynthos reveals its wild side — drive from Volimes to Kampi for cliffside views. Keri Lighthouse at the southwestern tip has one of the best sunsets — far less crowded than Navagio.
