The greenest Greek islands, where Venetian architecture meets Caribbean-blue waters, dramatic white cliffs, and beaches consistently ranked among Europe's finest.
If the Aegean is the Greece of postcards — whitewashed and windswept — then the Ionian is the Greece of daydreams. Lying off the western coast of the mainland, these islands are the greenest, lushest, and most romantically European of all Greek island groups. Tall cypress trees, cascading bougainvillea, Venetian fortresses, and beaches that could double for the Caribbean. The Ionian chain stretches from Corfu in the north to Kythira in the south. Corfu has the cosmopolitan polish of centuries of Venetian, French, and British rule. Kefalonia is all towering cliffs and underground lakes. Lefkada's beaches — Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma — routinely rank among the best in the Mediterranean. And Zakynthos has the most photographed beach in the world at Navagio. What unites the Ionians is the water. Protected from open Aegean winds, the sea here tends toward an almost supernatural shade of turquoise. The clarity is staggering — you can see the bottom at 15 meters. The food reflects Venetian heritage: sofrito and pastitsada in Corfu, meat pies in Kefalonia, and mandolato in Zakynthos.

June to September for beach weather (28-33°C air, 25-26°C water in August). September is the sweet spot — warm seas, reduced crowds, golden light. Unlike the Cyclades, the Ionians are mostly sheltered from the meltemi wind.
Direct flights to Corfu (CFU), Zakynthos (ZTH), and Kefalonia (EFL) from Athens and European cities. Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a causeway — driveable from Athens (~4.5 hours). Ferries from Igoumenitsa to Corfu (1.5 hours), Killini to Zakynthos (1 hour 15 min).
Lefkada is one of the few Greek islands reachable by car — connected to the mainland by a bridge. Rent a small boat in Nidri (Lefkada) or Fiskardo (Kefalonia) — many coves are only accessible by water. The west coasts have the most dramatic beaches but face open sea — east coast beaches offer sheltered alternatives on windy days. Visit Navagio Beach early morning or after 3pm to avoid the midday crush of tour boats. Corfu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — do not skip it for the beach.
