Χιλιαδού
Palme d'Or scenery. No admission fee.
Evia's most celebrated beach and a Palme d'Or filming location, where a 1.2 km crescent of sand meets towering mountains and views of the Sporades. Wild, cinematic, unforgettable.
Chiliadou is where Evia drops its modest act and goes full Hollywood — literally. This is the beach where Ruben Ostlund filmed the castaway scenes for "Triangle of Sadness," the Palme d'Or winner, and it subsequently won the 2022 European Film Location award. One look and you understand why: a 1.2-kilometer sweep of sand and multi-colored pebbles backed by the imposing foothills of Mount Dirfys, with dark slopes plunging into the Aegean and the Sporades archipelago floating on the horizon. The beach is divided by a large rock into two sections. The main southern stretch is wider and more accessible. The northern section has been a naturism center for over four decades. On calm days, the sea is sublime; on windy days, serious waves roll in. Completely unorganized — no umbrellas, sunbeds, or showers — preserving its wild character. Named after a 12th-century church in the gorge behind.

Late June through early September. Fully exposed to meltemi — check wind forecasts. Calmest conditions typically June and September.
From Chalkida: 57 km east via Steni Dirfios (~1.5 hours including winding descent). From Athens: ~135 km (~2.5 hours).
Check wind forecast before driving out — on strong meltemi days waves are enormous and swimming dangerous. Calm days are magnificent. Bring everything — shade, water, food. There is a seasonal canteen but limited infrastructure. If you have a kayak, paddle north along the coastline for dramatic sea-cliff scenery with caves and hidden coves.
