From the oracle at Delphi to the calm beaches of the Euboean Gulf, Central Greece offers mainland coastline, island access via the Evia bridge, and a pace of life the tourist trail forgot.

Central Greece, known locally as Sterea Ellada, is the region most travelers rush through on their way to somewhere else — and that is exactly what makes it special for those who stop. Stretching from the sacred slopes of Mount Parnassus and the oracle at Delphi down to the long, sun-warmed coastline of the Euboean Gulf, this is mainland Greece at its most varied and least pretentious. The region's greatest coastal asset is its connection to Evia, Greece's second-largest island, linked to the mainland by a bridge at Chalcis. This means you can drive from Athens to island beaches in under two hours without ever setting foot on a ferry. The western coast of the Euboean Gulf offers calm, shallow waters ideal for families, while the mainland shores around Galaxidi provide dramatic mountain-meets-sea scenery. Beyond the coast, Central Greece is layered with history. Delphi, once considered the center of the ancient world, sits perched above olive groves cascading to the sea. The Thermopylae pass is a short drive from beach towns. This is a region where you can explore a Bronze Age site in the morning and float in crystal-clear water by lunchtime.

May to October for beach activities. June-September is peak swimming season (water 22-26°C, air 30-35°C in July-August). May and October are ideal for combining coast with cultural visits — pleasant weather without the heat.

Easily accessible by car from Athens (1.5-3 hours via the Athens-Lamia highway E75). Chalcis, gateway to Evia, is 80 km from Athens (~1 hour). Regular KTEL buses from Athens Liosion terminal to Chalcis every 30 minutes. Evia connected by bridge at Chalcis, plus ferries from Rafina, Oropos, and Arkitsa.

The KTEL bus from Athens to Chalcis departs every 30 minutes — making Evia accessible even without a car. The coast road north from Chalcis passes through dozens of small beach towns with excellent tavernas and almost no foreign tourists. Time your Delphi visit for early morning or late afternoon, then drive to Galaxidi for a sunset swim. Weekdays are dramatically quieter than weekends — most visitors are Athenians on weekend escapes.
