The beach at the end of the mountain road

1 beaches

A wild, cliff-sheltered beach reached via a scenic mountain drive over Dirfi. Dark pebble shores, calm waters, sea caves, and a beautifully uncommercial atmosphere.

Getting to Petali requires commitment, and that is exactly what keeps it special. This secluded beach sits hidden between steep cliffs, reachable via a mountain road over Mount Dirfi and a final stretch of dirt road. The drive itself is half the experience: sweeping ridgeline views, dense forest, and growing anticipation. The beach has dark pebbles and scattered sand patches, flanked by cliff walls and shaded by tamarisk trees. The water is remarkably calm compared to other Aegean-side beaches. A cave with stalactites hides at one end. The sun reaches the beach around 3 PM due to cliff orientation — making it an ideal afternoon destination. Free campers pitch tents under tamarisk trees and stay for days.

Late June through September. Sun hits the beach around 3 PM — ideal as an afternoon destination. Pair with morning at Limnionas.

From Chalkida: ~54 km via Steni and over Mount Dirfi (~1.5 hours). Last 3 km dirt road, passable by regular cars. From Limnionas: 20 minutes south on connecting dirt road.

The cliff orientation means shade until 3 PM — plan accordingly. Makes it a perfect afternoon beach. Explore the stalactite cave at the southern end; more caves accessible by swimming in calm conditions. Canteen (Eleni) is seasonal — bring your own water and snacks to be safe.
