Nea Artaki

Νέα Αρτάκη

Where the fish is fresh, the water is calm, and Athens is just an hour away

7 beaches

A seafood-famous seaside town founded by Asia Minor refugees, where Athenian families come for shallow sandy beaches, waterfront tavernas, and the most honest fish meal on the Euboean Gulf.

Nea Artaki sits on the western coast of Evia, just 10 km north of Chalcis, and occupies a particular place in the Greek coastal experience. It is not a glamorous resort or a postcard village. What it is, with quiet confidence, is one of the most honest and welcoming seaside towns on the Euboean Gulf — a place where Athenian families have spent their summers for generations, where the seafood tavernas are packed because the fish came off the boat this morning, and where the shallow, sandy-bottomed sea extends so far that a toddler can wade for a hundred meters. The town was founded in 1923 by Greek refugees from the original Artaki (now Erdek) in Asia Minor, who carried with them a fierce cultural identity, their fishing traditions, and recipes passed down through centuries. That refugee heritage is still palpable: the Church of Panagia Phaneromeni, built by the original settlers, is the spiritual anchor of the community. In the tavernas along the waterfront, the seafood preparation shows the influence of Propontis cooking — grilled octopus, fresh sardines, stuffed mussels, and a fish soup that locals insist you cannot find anywhere else on Evia. The waterfront promenade connecting the beaches is the town's social heart, lined with cafes, ouzeries, and fish tavernas where the evening volta is a daily ritual. Nea Artaki is not the kind of place that makes top-ten lists, and that is exactly the point — it is a window into how Greek coastal life actually works.

June to September for swimming (22-26°C water). Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends. The patron saint festival on August 23rd (Panagia Phaneromeni) is a lively cultural event. May and October pleasant for waterfront dining though water may be cool.

From Athens (90 km, ~1.5 hours): take the Athens-Lamia highway to Chalcis, cross the Euripus bridge, drive north 10 km along the coast. From Chalcis center: 15-minute drive. KTEL buses from Chalcis serve Nea Artaki frequently. From Athens Liosion terminal, bus to Chalcis (every 30 min) then connect locally.

Walk the waterfront promenade at sunset — views across the Euboean Gulf to mainland mountains are best in golden hour. Try the grilled octopus and fresh-fried marides — Nea Artaki's seafood reputation is built on these dishes at a fraction of Athens prices. The water is shallow and calm for a surprisingly long distance — one of the safest beaches on Evia for very young children. Combine with a drive north to Politika and Dafni for uncrowded pebble beaches with mountain-spring-cooled turquoise water.
