Cyclades

The Cyclades are the Greece of your imagination. This is the archipelago that gave the world those iconic images: whitewashed sugar-cube houses tumbling down volcanic cliffs, blue-domed churches framing an impossibly blue sea, narrow marble lanes alive with bougainvillea, and sunsets that stop entire towns in their tracks. Santorini gets the fame, and rightly so. Mykonos has the nightlife. But the Cycladic magic reveals itself beyond these headliners. Naxos has the longest sandy beaches in the group. Paros has perfected the balance between accessibility and authenticity. Milos has over 70 beaches, each more geologically strange than the last. Folegandros and Sifnos offer clifftop villages with a fraction of the crowds. The beaches are defined by volcanic diversity: black sand, red sand, white sand, golden sand, moon-white rock formations, and underwater caves — sometimes on the same island. The meltemi wind in July-August keeps temperatures bearable but can make north-facing beaches rough while southern shores stay glassy calm.

June and September are ideal: warm weather (25-30°C), water 22-25°C, fewer visitors. July-August bring meltemi wind — refreshing but disruptive to ferries. May and October offer pleasant weather with cooler water and the quietest atmosphere.

Flights to Santorini (JTR) and Mykonos (JMK) from Athens (45 min) plus seasonal European routes. Ferries from Piraeus: high-speed 2-5 hours, conventional 4-8 hours. Inter-island ferries make hopping straightforward in summer. Book at least a week ahead in July-August via ferryhopper.com.

The meltemi wind blows from the north — south-facing beaches are your best bet in July-August. Check windfinder.com each morning. Smaller islands like Folegandros, Sifnos, and Koufonisia offer the quintessential experience without Santorini prices. Sunset from Plaka Castle in Milos or the Kastro in Sifnos is equally spectacular to Oia and far less crowded. Ferry delays are common in summer wind — build buffer days into island-hopping itineraries.
