Seventy beaches, every one a different planet
The island of 70+ beaches, where volcanic geology has painted the coast in white, red, ochre, and black — from the lunar Sarakiniko to the pirate caves of Kleftiko, the Cyclades' most colorful secret.
Milos is where the Venus de Milo was unearthed in 1820, but the island's real masterpiece is its coastline. With 70-80 beaches — the most of any Cycladic island — they are the most geologically diverse in all of Greece. Volcanic activity has painted this coast in a palette no artist would dare: snow-white pumice, ochre sulfur, rust-red iron oxide, jet-black obsidian, and every shade in between. Sarakiniko is the headliner — imagine the moon's surface dropped into the Aegean, smooth white rock sculpted into surreal pillowy formations. But Sarakiniko is just the opener. Kleftiko is a sea-cave paradise accessible only by boat, where pirates once hid among white rock arches. Tsigrado is reached by climbing down a ladder into a cliff. Firiplaka combines volcanic-striped cliffs with a long beach. Papafragas is a swimming pool inside a collapsed sea cave. Beyond beaches, Milos has genuine charm. Klima's colorful boathouses are among the most photographed in the Cyclades. Plaka offers sunset from castle ruins that rivals Oia. The Catacombs of Milos are one of only three early Christian catacomb complexes in the world.

June and September are best. June: 25-29°C, water 21-23°C, beaches not yet packed. September: warmest sea (24-25°C), golden light makes volcanic landscapes even more dramatic. July-August hot and increasingly busy.
Milos Airport (MLO) has Athens flights (30-35 min). Ferries from Piraeus: high-speed 3.5-4 hours, conventional 5-7 hours. Inter-island ferries to Santorini, Sifnos, Kimolos (20 min from Pollonia). Rental car or ATV essential — many beaches are down rough dirt roads.
Visit Sarakiniko at sunrise or before 9am for the best light on white rock and nearly empty landscape — by noon it is packed. Book a full-day boat tour from Adamas — it is the only way to reach Kleftiko and stops at 4-5 otherwise inaccessible beaches. Watch sunset from Plaka castle — free, uncrowded, 360-degree panorama many locals consider superior to Oia. Rent a small 4x4, not an ATV — many roads are unpaved, steep, and gravelly. Have dinner in Pollonia — the waterfront tavernas serve excellent fresh fish and the Kimolos ferry departs from here.
